Interpreters instantly translate the speaker’s words.
INTERPRETERS: It requires one or two conference interpreters depending on the nature of the job.
EQUIPMENT: If it is in-person, it is carried out using interpreting booths or audio guides. If it is online, it is called remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) and is carried out via the Internet. Occasionally, simultaneous interpreting can be carried out without equipment, for a single person, and for a very short time: this is known as ‘chuchotage’, which means “whispered interpreting” in French.
ADVANTAGES: It is extremely fast and efficient, with maximum use of time. The interpreters go unnoticed, they are just a discreet voice heard through an earphone.
DISADVANTAGES: In-person interpreting requires rather expensive equipment. It is more impersonal than liaison interpreting.
