The geography of Navarra

LaThe Navarra Designation or Origin is located entirely in the Statutory Community of Navarre, in Northern Spain. It is divided into five production areas: Baja Montaña, Tierra Estella, Valdizarbe, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja.

Navarra in figures

Navarre has a vineyard surface area of approximately 11,000 hectares. Its average annual production is 80 million kilos of grapes, which are turned into 60 million litres of wine.

Navarra wines

One of the longest-established wine designations of origin, Navarra combines traditional stock with imported varieties from other famous wine-producing regions to offer a wide range of high-quality wines.

Perhaps the best-known wines of Navarra are its ‘free-run’ rosés, light strawberry pink, with fruity aroma and unparalleled flavour. However, Navarra also produces many red and white wines which are held in high esteem throughout the world.

Navarra wineries stand out for their combination of traditional varieties such as Tempranillo with imported varieties. The red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot offer a complexity and degree of quality which outshine not only the newly emergent wine regions of the world but are also manifestly superior to similar wines produced by revered, centuries-old designations. There is also a small, highly-coveted production of Syrah wines which are truly spectacular.

Mention must also be made of the new barrel-fermented Chardonnays, which are delighting wine tasters all over the world. Finally, we must not forget the fine, intensely fragrant and complex Muscats of Navarra.
