Simultaneous interpreting

The interpreters translate the speaker’s words immediately.

Interpreters: You will need one or two conference interpreters depending on the characteristics of the job.

Equipment: Normally done with fixed equipment or portable equipment. Sometimes the service can be provided without equipment: for one person and for a short time. This is called “chuchotage”, the French term for “whispered interpreting”

Advantages: It is the fastest and most efficient modality, making the best use of the time available. It minimises the interpreters’ presence; they just become a discreet voice heard through an earpiece.

Disadvantages: This modality usually requires equipment, which can be expensive. It is more impersonal than liaison interpreting.
